What exactly is Patreon? A question I have been asked frequently in recent weeks by numerous people unsure about how it works or its benefits. Here’s a short description of Patreon and how I intend to use it.

WHAT IS PATREON?

Patreon is an exclusive, safe and simple to understand platform where creators can connect and communicate with an audience of ‘Patrons’ who follow their journey as they work on various projects, business ventures or other activities. With a small monthly donation, you can be a part of something special, which in my case is a beautiful and artistic coffee table book publication showcasing the soul of the African continent.

Simply put, Patreon is like Facebook that requires a monthly donation. As a Patron of Armand Grobler, you can choose from 3 membership tiers to suit your budget, starting from as little as $10 a month (or 2 cups of coffee). Each membership tier gives you access to various levels of ‘rewards’ such as images, videos, wallpapers, virtual coffee, early access to publications, photo tips, stories from the field, discounts and more!

WHY PATREON?

To publish a high-quality coffee table book takes years of work to accomplish. With the production of my first book, ‘PHOTO SAFARI KRUGER,’ I spent approximately 300 days annually in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve to achieve the required result to publish a top-quality product.

It is not a case of a quick visit to the bush, taking a few images, writing a couple of stories and putting it together to create a book. It takes tremendous sacrifice and years of grueling work to capture and create something uniquely special to showcase to an audience that expect only the highest standard. The market demands creativity – something that costs both time and money.

With rising costs of fuel, food, accommodation, equipment, permits and the list goes on and on … it has become nearly impossible to work on a project without the help of sponsorships and donations. To put it quite simply, without help this publication won’t exist. However, to give back to those who choose to invest in what I do as a wildlife photographer, I have decided to create a platform where you become a part of the project and share in the wild experiences with me.

IS IT PERMANENT?

Certainly not! As a Patron, you contribute a small monthly fee to be a part of the adventure, however you can cancel at any time should you choose to do so. Some rewards (such as selected discounts or joining me on location) requires an active membership of at least 12 months, however by no means are you locked in at any stage.

HOW CAN I PAY?

Payments can be done with PayPal or Credit Card. I have been a Patron of other creators for over 3 years now and have never experienced any payment problems, fraud or similar. When I have had financial difficulties, I have canceled my membership, only to rejoin once the finances allow again.
