KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
The Kruger National Park is home to many of Africa’s most iconic wildlife species including the famous ‘African big five,’ painted dogs, cheetah, giraffe, hippo, crocodile and over 500 species of residential and migratory birds. Covering an area of approximately 19 500km2, there are few places on the African continent that rival the diversity in terms of landscapes and wildlife that Kruger can offer.
From flowing rivers and open plains to dense thickets and rocky outcrops, the Kruger National Park has it all. This budget-friendly photographic workshop will introduce you to the basics of wildlife photography while providing an opportunity to utilize your skills on wild subjects.
For experienced photographers, this workshop will provide you with the opportunity to experiment with styles and techniques, increasing your photography skillset while enjoying a wonderful day out in nature.
WHAT TO EXPECT
As with any wild place, there are no guarantees in wildlife sightings, particularly the more elusive species such as leopard, cheetah and painted dogs, however there is a real possibility of seeing them all especially on longer 4 – 6 night workshops. The more frequently encountered animals on safari in the Kruger National Park are elephant, lion, giraffe, buffalo and hippo along with other plains game such as zebra, wildebeest and impala.
Rare sightings such as pangolin, aardvark, African wild cat and servals have been recorded, however due to their secretive nature and often nocturnal habits, these animals make for an exception and spectacular sighting on safari.
Birds such as white backed vulture, glossy starlings, various eagles, waterbirds and resident rollers are frequently seen on safari. During the drier months it can be a common sighting to have them occupy a local water hole, quenching their thirst or taking a bath.
Summer migratory species such as various kingfishers, rollers, storks and eagles can be regularly seen and heard (best time for migratory birds is between December – April). With summer rainfall you can also expect to see an influx of insects and macro photography is often a fantastic option to get up closer and personal with some of our unique residents.
YOUR EXPERIENCE
This photographic workshop is conducted in an Open Safari Vehicle (OSV) giving guests a 360-degree elevated view. You will be guided by a qualified, professional field guide who will interpret the wonders of nature to you, teaching about the bush and its wild inhabitants.
You will also be hosted by one of our expert photographic guides who will assist in positioning the vehicle, provide you with quality with photo tips, help with any questions you may have and ensure you get the most out of your camera and photographic experience.
This workshops is available as a 1-Day workshop from Hoedspruit, or a multiple night expedition staying inside the Kruger Park. We recommend a minimum of 2 night’s with this expedition to give yourself adequate time to experience the beauty of the Kruger.
Should you want to stay 4 nights or longer, we can also combine different regions of the Park so you an experience more than just a particular section. The southern section of Kruger Park is renowned for its high density of big cats, whereas the north is better known for its bird life and tranquility, with fewer tourists around.
WE RECOMMEND
In order for you to fully enjoy the natural splendor of Kruger Park we recommend a 4+ night stay, allowing us to utilize 2 or more camps. This will also give you the opportunity to photograph nature in different settings within the Park, as the scenery is an everchanging spectacle.
If you are new to photography or not entirely comfortable with your new camera equipment, we recommend combining the Kruger Park photo workshop with a 3-hour theory session at the Korongo Conference Centre in Hoedspruit where your photographic host will go through all the modes, basic styles and artistic techniques in wildlife photography. This will save a great deal of time on the safari itself, giving you confidence before setting out to test your new skills.
The optimum experience would be a 10-night, ‘South – North’ safari, spending a great deal of time exploring the entirety of the Kruger Park, which will also provide you with remarkable photographic opportunities. This trip would have to be booked well in advance to ensure availability at camps such as Lower Sabie, Satara and Shingwedzi.
Should you just want to book a ‘Day Trip’ to practice a new style or technique of photography, we are happy to assist you.
